City climate actions
Derby Sustainability Board
The Derby Sustainability Board is a partnership of key stakeholders from across the city, ranging from public bodies such as the NHS, to large corporate organisations, small and medium sized businesses, community and voluntary organisations and community groups.
While the Council, through its civic role, facilitates the Board, it does not run it. Partners come together voluntarily at least four times per year to make change in our city in the face of a global climate crisis.
The partnership supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals, working in the spirit of collaboration which we call ‘TeamDerby’.
Responsibilities of the Board include:
- agreeing the strategic direction and ambition for a sustainable city
- establishing shorter term priorities that will have the biggest impact on achieving the vision based on evidence and in consultation, where appropriate, with residents and employees
- agreeing a set of indicators that will demonstrate progress against outcomes
- reporting regularly to the Derby Partnership Board and escalating issues to remove barriers or blockages to delivery including resources
- reviewing the vision, priorities and governance, at least every three years.
Working with other local authorities
The Council works extensively in partnership with other local authorities, planning strategic action across the region, pooling resources and sharing knowledge and experience.
Innovate UK Fast Followers project
The Innovate UK Fast Followers project works in partnership with local authorities across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire (D2N2). Fast Followers is part of Innovate UK’s Net Zero Living Programme, designed to help places and businesses across the UK to accelerate the delivery of the transition to net zero. Partners will create a consistent and coordinated approach across the D2N2 region to supporting residents, businesses and communities to understand how their actions contribute to climate change. The aim is to embed long-term positive behaviour changes to reduce carbon emissions, whilst bringing added benefits such as reduced bills, cleaner air and improved health.
D2 Energy Action Group
Local authorities in Derbyshire work together, as the D2 Energy Action Group, towards their net zero targets, in support of D2 local authority Climate Emergency Declarations, and D2N2 LEP’s Energy Strategy.
Derby Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP)
Work will soon start on a significant piece of research, to better understand the most effective route for Derby to decarbonise and contribute to national net zero ambitions, in addition to our own 2035 target. The Derby Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP) will involve looking at current energy use and future decarbonisation opportunities for electricity, heat, and gas networks, the built environment (industrial, domestic and commercial) and the future potential for hydrogen and other low carbon fuels. Derby’s LAEP will be coordinated alongside the other areas within the region to ensure a consistent and joined up approach across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
Let’s Talk Derby Climate
As a city, we’ll need to work together to reduce our carbon footprint and become net zero. As part of that, we need to have conversations and hear what residents and businesses have to say.
We’ve created Let’s Talk Derby Climate where we’ll host regular polls, surveys and other engagement events so we can hear your thoughts and ideas about Derby’s journey to net zero.
