Why register a cooling tower?

Cooling towers are heat removal devices used to transfer process waste heat to the atmosphere. They are used to provide cooled water for air-conditioning, manufacturing and electric power generation.

The main purpose for registering a cooling tower relates to the control of legionella and the investigation of legionnaires’ disease.

More information on cooling towers and evaporative condensers can be found in the Cooling Towers and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.

Register a cooling tower

You must notify the Licensing Team in writing with details of cooling towers and/ or evaporative condensers, except where they contain water that is not exposed to the air and the water and electricity supply are not connected. 

Registration is free of charge.

How to register

1. Complete the Notification of Cooling Towers Form
2. Email your completed notification form to the Licensing team at licensing@derby.gov.uk.

Decommissioning a cooling tower

If a cooling tower becomes redundant or needs to be dismantled then you will need to email the Licensing team at licensing@derby.gov.uk.
