Help Derby’s children wrap up warm this winter

The Council is again asking for donations of new or pre-loved coats to support more families in need
Derby City Council has launched its warm coat appeal which helps families who are struggling to keep their children warm in winter.
The appeal was first launched last year to collect and distribute quality winter coats to families struggling with the rising cost of living, receiving more than 450 new and pre-loved coats.
Now the Council is again asking for donations of new or pre-loved coats to support more families in need this winter.
Councillor Paul Hezelgrave, Cabinet Member for Cost of Living, Equalities and Customer Inclusion said:
As we move into the winter months, families who are already struggling because of the cost of living crisis face lots of additional pressures. Helping these families to make sure that their children have warm coats is just one of the ways in which we’re providing support this winter.
Last year, over 450 new and pre-loved coats were donated to children in need across Derby. That’s 450 children who might not have had access to a warm winter coat without the generous support of citizens and organisations across Derby.
Not only will the donations help relieve some of the financial strain on families, but also prevent some usable coats from being thrown away. I’d encourage any families who are worried about making ends meet this winter to find out what support is available to them. This can seem like a daunting time of year, but I want to reassure you that you are not alone, and help is available.
The appeal is open now and will run until February 2024. It’s easy to donate a coat, just drop it off at one of the city’s Family Hubs. All baby, child and young adult coats in good condition are welcome.
As soon as Family Hubs have received enough donations, families will be invited to get in touch and arrange collections.
The Council has partnered with Community Action Derby to create an online hub with lots of useful support and guidance on managing the rising cost of living. There’s also more information on the Derby City Council website.
