This year, Derby has faced significant challenges and changes, particularly as the cost-of-living crisis continues to affect our residents. However, as a resilient city, we have risen to meet these challenges by collaborating with local partners and running various initiatives to provide vital support to our community.

A big change to something that is a key part of our communities’ hearts are the libraries. The decision to entrust Derby’s community libraries to an award-winning charity is a proud step forward for our city. It reflects a deep commitment to preserving these vital spaces that bring people together, promote learning, and support our diverse communities. By collaborating with a dedicated organization, we’re ensuring these libraries not only continue to serve but also flourish as hubs of connection and opportunity for all. This partnership ensures that these spaces remain open to those who wish to learn and develop in a safe environment.

From the outset, we recognised the pressing need to support residents impacted by the cost-of-living crisis, particularly following the Winter Fuel Allowance announcement. While navigating legal and financial constraints, we acted decisively and proactively. We understood the impact this would have on many of our residents we have continued to focus on practical solutions that address the needs of everyone in our community.

A key element of our efforts has been robust collaboration with Community Action Derby, Food 4 Thought Alliance, and other local partners. These partnerships have enabled us to launch initiatives that provide tangible support. For instance, through the Household Support Fund, over 2,000 pensioners who were previously ineligible for Pension Credit have now received direct payments of £100. Additionally, targeted outreach efforts have included distributing 5,000 informational booklets, sending emails to 28,000 residents, and using social media and local media channels to ensure that everyone in Derby was aware of the support that is available to them.

We also organized a series of Pensioner Advice Events, starting with a flagship event on Friday 4 October, attended by over 200 residents. These one-stop shops offered invaluable resources, from benefits advice to mental health support, energy efficiency tips, and help with pension credit applications. The success of these events has led to their expansion across Derby, including sessions in Mackworth, Sinfin, Chaddesden, and beyond.

I would like to encourage anyone who may be struggling during this time, please visit the cost of living resource page to learn what support is available to you.

Derby’s resilience has shone through during these challenging times. By leveraging strong community partnerships and innovative approaches, we continue to provide vital support to our residents. My heartfelt thanks go to the council colleagues, community leaders, and partners who have worked tirelessly to make these initiatives a success. Together, we are ensuring that Derby remains a city that cares for its residents, no matter the challenges we face.
