Bulky waste outside a house

Residents will have the chance to book a free collection using the Council’s existing bulky waste collection system.

From Monday 22 April, up to 250 households will be able to book a free bulky waste collection for up to three items on a first come, first serve basis. The free collections are the realisation of a key manifesto pledge made by the administration with the free collections being approved in November 2023.

Residents will have the chance to book a free collection using the Council’s existing bulky waste collection system, online. Collection dates will be available until the end of May, giving bookers five weeks of dates to choose from so they can pick a day that’s most convenient to them.

If residents miss out on the free slots, the system will notify them at the time of booking.

Councillor Hardyal Dhindsa commented:

“In our manifesto, we pledged to make it easier for residents to recycle and dispose of waste whilst being responsible with the cities finances. We know that residents highly value the bulky waste collection service, but the cost can be a barrier.

“This is only the first set of free collections taking place this year. We’ll announce details of the next free collections as soon as we’re able to. In addition, we’re also announcing that we’ll be allowing residents to visit Raynesway HWRC on a Sunday without a booking, from Sunday 7 April.”

The free system allows for one free collection per household. Each household will be able to place one to three items for collection on their selected day. One item can include:

  • a table
  • a sofa
  • an armchair
  • a mattress
  • a bed frame
  • three black bin bags

There are some items that cannot be collected and residents should check the information on the bulky waste page on the Council website before booking to ensure we can collect the items that are presented.

Any items must be placed outside the property before 6.30am on the day of collection, the same way you’d put wheelie bins out for emptying.

From Sunday 7 April, residents will also be able to visit Raynesway HWRC without a booking on Sundays only. Those wanting to visit on other days, will still need a booking to access the site.
