English for Speakers of Other Languages - supporting arrivals from Ukraine
There are a number of support group sessions for all levels of English support classes that have existed for a number of years within the city.
There are some specific sessions also available just for Ukrainians for those who wish to be part of these. Currently a Thursday session is delivered between 10.30am and 12.30pm at FEE Café, 119 Osmaston Road.
Further sessions will be set up at other venues in the near future, including at the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) office.

An English course for people with little or no English language skills who would benefit from pre–entry to entry-level-one support. Those eligible are adults over 19 years old who are not in employment and not actively seeking employment.
This is a non-accredited course which does not involve formal qualifications.
Unfortunately, this course is not available to asylum seekers.

The course formats are::
- three times per week (180 hrs)
- twice a week (150hrs)
- once a week (90 hrs).
Courses run from September to July. Offer a mixture of exams and own learning goals, depending on individual needs. Courses are free for learners who are unemployed, looking for work and receiving JSA, or receiving universal credit. No charge where learners’ salary is below £17K per annum. Otherwise the fee is £4 per hour.
All the courses are currently taking place online, however after lockdown hoping to move back to centres at Derby Multicultural Centre, Rycote Centre, Village Learning Centre and Allen Park.

Lexis for 16 to 18 year olds offers two programmes for all levels of ESOL at The Roundhouse: One programme is a full-time foundation language programme which includes ESOL, maths and Essential Digital Skills which runs for 35 weeks from September to July. The other programme is a full- time ESOL-only programme which runs for 12 weeks and starts in September, January and April.
Part-time adult ESOL takes place at the St James Centre and Southgate Retail Park with six hours of learning per week.
It is free for people who:
- are unemployed and receive JSA, ESA, Income Support or Tax Credits
- asylum seekers in receipt of NASS support provided they have been in the UK for at least 6 months
- students earning below £17K are also free and
Students below £20k but more than £17k may apply for aid.
Otherwise, the cost of the programme is £200 per 12 week term.

ESOL for Integration Fund provides free courses for people who have low level English skills (pre-entry or Entry 1). It is primarily aimed at people who cannot access SFA or public funded provision, are aged 19+ and are not in employment or education.
There are approximately ten courses per term in various settings, such as adult learning centres, primary schools, churches and mosques.
