Waste Local Plan
We work with Derbyshire County Council to produce planning policy guidance for developments that deal with the management of the waste we produce.
It covers the administrative areas of Derby and Derbyshire, outside the Peak District National Park.
What current planning guidance on waste developments in Derby is there?
In March 2005, we adopted a Waste Local Plan with Derbyshire County Council. This Plan guides decisions on planning applications for developments related to waste management.
The Plan has policies for all types of waste, not just household waste. It complements the Derbyshire Waste Management Strategy, which deals with how councils in Derbyshire handle waste from homes.
The policies cover:
- Development related to recycling (like recycling centres)
- Reuse of waste (like community composting areas and plants to process waste)
- Disposal of waste (including landfill sites)
Since February 2008, following a Government Direction, we no longer use the W1a policy.
What new plans are being produced?
In 2009, the City and County Councils started work on a Waste Core Strategy Development Plan Document (DPD), but due to changes in planning law and regulations, we stopped work on this plan. We are now working on a new Derbyshire and Derby Waste Local Plan, which will guide decisions on any planning applications for waste management developments up to 2040 and will replace the existing Waste Local Plan.
Until it is complete, we will follow the current Waste Local Plan and relevant policies in Derby City's Local Plan Review to decide on planning applications for waste developments in Derby.
