Street collection types
Busking
If you wish to busk in the city centre you must obtain a licence.
All busking licences are issued by Derby Live. Please view the Derby Live website for more information on busking and how to apply for a licence.
Charity event collections
You are allowed to collect on any route that is part of a charity event, however you must first obtain permission to do so by applying for a street collection permit.
You will need permission for events such as:
- charity bed-pushes
- carnivals
- charity walks.
You will also need to notify a number of organisations about the event before it starts.
Organisations that need to be informed of a charity event
- Derby City Council Licensing team. Email licensing@derby.gov.uk.
- The Chief Officer of Police, Derbyshire Constabulary, St Mary’s Wharf, Prime Parkway, Chester Green, Derby, DE1 3AB.
- The Highways and Transport Department. Telephone 01332 641824 or 01332 641825.
When informing the above organisations the following details should be included:
- event date
- details of the event - what the event is and what will be happening at the event
- event route
- name of charitable organisation you will be collecting for
- contact details of event organiser - name, address, email and telephone number.
Collections in parks
If you wish to collect in one of the parks in Derby you will need permission.
To obtain permission contact the Parks team via email at parks@derby.gov.uk.
Collections in the city centre
In the city centre, you can only collect in specific areas. You are also only permitted to collect in one of these areas.
To collect in the city centre you must apply for a street collection permit.

Collections outside the city centre
Apart from the restrictions to collections within the city centre, you can apply for a street collection permit in any other area of city.
Direct debit collections
Permission for direct debit collections must be obtained from Spacehire.
Spacehire can be contacted by emailing spacehire@derby.gov.uk or by telephoning 01332 640848.
Market Hall collections
If you wish to collect in the Market Hall you must have permission.
To obtain permission you must email the Markets Officer at derby.markets@derby.gov.uk.
Selling goods in the street
If you want to sell goods in the street you may need a street traders licence or consent.
If you hold a licence or consent you will still need to apply for a street collection permit for any charity collections you wish to hold.
You will also need to contact Spacehire for permission to have a stall, exhibition, table, gazebo or similar. A fee is charged for these activities. View the Derby Live website for more information.
Collections in shopping centres
If you wish to hold a collection in any of the shopping centres listed below you will need to contact the owners of that property or land for permission to have a street collection.
- Foresters Business Park
- Kingsway Retail Park
- Meteor Shopping Centre
- Park Farm Centre
- Sinfin Shopping Centre
- Wyvern Retail area.
Permission for collecting in the Derbion Shopping Centre
Shopping areas in the city are privately controlled and therefore we do not issue permits for these areas, you must contact the Derbion Centre Manager for permission on 01332 366383.
