The annual Great British Spring Clean, led by Keep Britain Tidy, is back for its seventh year and began earlier today with several events taking place throughout the city.

The project aims to encourage local people to do their bit to clean up litter in Derby. For this year’s campaign, which runs until Sunday 10 April, we are encouraging everyone in the local community to get involved and help us to clear the streets of Derby. Whether that be picking up pieces litter you see during your walk to work or gathering a group of friends to spend the morning picking a bag of litter each; there are lots of ways to get involved. We are also hosting lots of events which double up as a great socialising activity.

It’s not just the environmental factors that are involved, in a survey of people who took part in 2021, 86% said the volunteering helped improve their mood, and a further 52% agreed it helped them meet new people and make friends. The project is a great way to meet likeminded people while making a positive impact on the local area.

There’s lots of different ways to get involved, one of which is by attending one of our events. For further information about our events, or other ways to get involved, send an email to our Neighbourhoods team.

You can also pledge to get involved today on the Keep Britain Tidy website and support us on social media with the hashtag #GBSpringClean and #BigBagChallenge. Keep an eye on our social media platforms for photos from the events as they take place.

Although the Great British Spring Clean ends in April, we can ensure that local neighbourhoods and parks look and feel tidy throughout the year by working together as a city. We can do this by putting any rubbish in the bins provided and reporting fly tipping on our website. The Public Protection Officers around Derby also continue to tackle littering, fly tipping and dog fouling throughout the city along with our Streetpride teams.

If you are unable to take your rubbish to Raynesway Household Waste and Recycling Centre please book a bulky waste collection. Similarly, we have teams of street cleaners working across the city who use a variety of methods to keep the city tidy on a daily basis. If you feel your street is not cleaned to a satisfactory standard, please report it to us on our website.
