Abnormal loads - notification
Abnormal loads are vehicles over 40 tonnes that are extra wide, long or high. They might be machinery or materials for a construction site, or plant machinery for industry. Such loads may only be allowed to use certain routes, at certain times and at particular speeds. Sometimes they are escorted.
Do I need to inform you about abnormal loads?
Yes, haulage firms must notify us, as the Highway Authority, before they are able to move such loads.
We run an abnormal load checking service. This includes checking whether bridges can take such a load, checking the road alignment and seeing whether any road works are taking place.
