Journey to Work programme
Balfour Beatty Construction
It was a real pleasure to work with you all on the Journey to Work Programme. We would like to continue with the great collaboration work we have started and with the pupils named below to include Kyle, Will, Ashley and Owen by offering them all a 2-week work experience at the Nottingham Footbridge project.
Derby City Council Livewell - Paul McGinty
The Journey 2 Work programme is a fantastic way to give young people experience of being in a workplace and helping them to develop skills such as supporting customers / service users and working as part of a team, whilst building their confidence. It was a straightforward process and the support from Hana and the team was great. We are very keen to provide more opportunities in the future. Thank you.
Derby Arena – Mark and Gaynor
A great chance for us to share our world of opportunities, from sports and fitness to events and hospitality and create unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime!
We are Padel – Aidan
Changed perspective of the standard of delivery and has allowed management to think about when hiring new recruits what that looks like.… Rethinking recruitment going forward in a positive.
Transition2 - Simon
Maddie’s progression at Transition2 has taken her from learner to volunteer, then Journey to Work participant, and now part-time customer service apprentice. The Journey to Work programme has provided both Maddie and Transition2 with a strong foundation for moving into long term paid employment

A very nice event giving engagement opportunities to young people who would not normally have the confidence to do so. Some positive conversations and advice given on how to apply for roles.
Case studies
Leonardo Hotel Derby
I’m Colm, Hotel Manager at Leonardo Hotel Derby. I’ve been with the company nine years and have worked across Ireland and the UK.
I was attracted to the programme because it gave us the opportunity to make a meaningful difference beyond the walls of the hotel. I’m passionate about learning and development and strongly believe in creating pathways into hospitality for local talent. The Journey to Work programme aligns perfectly with my values - supporting young people to build confidence, gain skills, and see hospitality as a long-term career.
Prior to partnering with Derby City Council, we had not worked with an external organisation to support recruitment in this way. This was also our first time attending targeted jobs fairs and exploring alternative recruitment pathways to widen our talent pool. The experience has been incredibly valuable and has strengthened our commitment to inclusive recruitment. We received excellent support throughout the programme from Hana and the Journey to Work team. They provided clear guidance, resources, and regular communication, making it easy to understand how we could make the biggest impact. The collaboration created a strong partnership and allowed us to align the programme with our hotel’s operational needs.
The programme has been very successful. We have proudly employed three programme members into our hotel team, which is a fantastic outcome and a testament to the impact of the initiative.
It has also been incredibly rewarding to see how the programme has supported both the young people and our existing team. Mentoring has encouraged leadership, ownership, and pride and we have seen the positive difference in participants’ confidence, skills and future direction.
The Journey to Work programme reflects exactly who we are as a business- supportive, inclusive, and passionate about development - and we would absolutely be involved again.
