Equality, diversity and inclusion at work
Equality, diversity and inclusion at the heart of all our work
We are proud of our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion in employment and in recruitment and selection. This is demonstrated in our Equality, Dignity and Respect Policy.
We want our workforce at all levels to be as diverse as the community we live in. We welcome job applications from all sections of our community.
Search our vacancies to see if there is a job that appeals to you and then look at the person specification to see if the job is right for you. The essential requirements are listed on the person specification.
If you join us as a colleague we can guarantee that equality and diversity and inclusion lies at the heart of all our work and is embraced by each and every directorate.
Guaranteed interview scheme for disabled people
We are committed to employing disabled people and have earned the Disability Confident Leader status form the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
If you are a disabled person and choose to take part in our guaranteed interview scheme, we will guarantee you an interview if you meet the essential requirements of the job.
If you want to apply under the guaranteed interview scheme, please tell us by filling in the relevant section of the job application form.
Reasonable adjustments
We will make reasonable adjustments for disabled people both during the recruitment process and in the job itself.
For example, you may need a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter at interview or you may need us to consider removing a particular job requirement, such as the need for a driving licence.
Please tell us what adjustments you need by filling in the relevant section of the job application form. If you are unable to complete our online application form, please get in touch and we will give you the application form in another way that will help you access it.
Disability equality at work
We follow the social model of disability, rather than the medical model. This means that we recognise that it is a series of barriers to inclusion that disables people, not their impairments – these barriers can be removed.
We encourage our disabled colleagues to fill in a Disability Equality at Work form so we can do all we can to make sure reasonable adjustments are made.
We also have disability leave for disabled colleagues to take time out of work to attend appointments or treatment related to their impairment.
Stonewall Diversity Champions
From 2010 to 2014 we were Stonewall Diversity Champions, and secured a top 45 ranking each year in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index top 100 employers.
Although no longer members of the Diversity Champions Scheme, we still work to the principles of the Equality Index.
Our colleagues take part in events such as Derby Pride, International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia and LGBT History Month and we have a very active LGBTQ+ Employee Network.
Employee networks
Our employee networks offer help, advice and support in a friendly and safe environment. The networks help us remove any barriers to employment, service delivery and help us promote equality, diversity and inclusion at the Council.
We have three employee networks:
- BESN - Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Employees Support Network
- DEN - Disabled Employees Network
- LGBTQ+ - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning Plus and Allies Employee Network.
The networks help us organise equality themed events such Black History Season, Show Racism the Red Card, Wear Red Day, International Day of Disabled People, National Interfaith Week, Transgendered Remembrance Day, LGBT History Month, International Women’s Day, International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Bi-Visibility Day and many more.
