Roads - closures and diversions
We are responsible for dealing with requests to temporarily close roads. Temporary road closures may be needed to allow roadworks to take place safely – or to allow other works, such as a mobile crane to be moved into place. A legal order is required before any road may be closed.
How do I apply for a temporary road closure?
If you would like to apply for a temporary road closure, please complete the Application for a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) and contact us to discuss your works.
How long will it take before I know if my application has been successful?
The legal process involved means that a minimum of six weeks' notice is required to process the request after we receive your completed application form. A temporary road closure order will only be approved where we are satisfied that it is the only viable option to carry out the road-works safely. Any order that we issue will also have conditions attached.
Following an internal review, it has been agreed that the following will be the new fee structure – applicable from 1 January 2025:
- Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) - £1250
- Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice (TTRN) - £500
- Emergency Temporary Traffic Regulation Order - £500
- Section 50 Applications - £700
From 1 January 2025, we shall be refusing any TTROs and Section 50s which have been submitted with the earlier purchase order amounts.
What else will I need to consider?
You must also arrange for 'diversion' signs for the traffic diversion route: we recommend that you contact a traffic management contractor to do this for you. You will need to submit information about traffic management and the ‘diversion’ signs with the application.
