City wide cycle improvements
Over the last year, nationally, cycling has risen by 46%. In 2020, we saw the highest level of cycling on the public highway since the 1960s, and the greatest year-on-year increase in post-war history. Recent pop-up cycle lanes on London Road have been considered a success and many workers used them when there was a reluctance to travel on public transport.
Post pandemic there has never been a better time to look to improve facilities that promote active travel. The schemes shown here are where we think that a real difference can be made by either introducing new facilities or improving existing ones in line with new Government guidance.
The cycle lane improvements are funded by two different funding streams. The first is 'Transforming Cities Fund' or TCF for the following Cycle Route Corridors schemes:
- Nottingham Road between Pentagon Island and Raynesway
- Railway Terrace between Midland Road and Siddals Road including Calvert Street
- The Morledge and Traffic Street between the Bus Station and Castleward Boulevard
- Greenwich Drive South to Onslow Road, Mickleover (Sustrans, National Cycle Network Route 54/68)

The second pot of funding is from the 'Active Travel Fund' or ATF. ATF will be funding five schemes - Active Travel Fund Cycle Improvement consultation overview map

You might not use all of the cycle lanes in the city so you will be able to select which schemes you would like to give your feedback on. If you have the time we would appreciate your feedback on all of our proposed schemes.
To give your views, please view the plans and complete our survey. The survey is open for 12 weeks and closes on Monday 14 February 2022.
