Find out about bin charges
Bin charges policy
We receive over 1000 bin requests each month which the Council is unable to continue to fully fund. A £25 administration and delivery charge for replacement or additional black bins is intended to encourage everyone to take responsibility for the bins they have been issued with. We appreciate that no one really wants to pay for a wheelie bin, but some households are not taking care of the bins they’ve been given which is leading to loss.
The income generated by charges offset costs, providing savings for the Council and ultimately, the taxpayer.
Additional or replacement blue (recycling) and brown bins (organic waste) are free of charge to encourage recycling.
Ownership of the bin
Bins remain the property of Derby City Council and must remain at the property it has been issued to unless otherwise agreed.
Purchasing your own bins and bags
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, the Council has a legal obligation to collect household waste but can specify the containers that need to be used.
We only empty black bins which have been supplied by Derby City Council, as we can be sure that these meet the expected quality and safety standards.
The Council does not collect waste presented in sacks due to the health and safety risk they present.
Deliveries
If your home has a frontage, we will bring your new black bin onto your property and post a delivery card through your letterbox. You won't need to sign for it.
Please note, we cannot be held responsible for any item going missing if it is delivered in your absence.
Unfortunately, residents are unable to collect a black bin from our depot due to health and safety.
Refunds
If you have paid to have a replacement bin delivered, but your old one has turned up, providing you cancel your order before we have attempted delivery, we can refund you.
We are unable to refund orders which have been processed and where delivery has been attempted. If your old bin reappears, contact us and we will remove it. Our collection teams won’t empty additional black bins on bin day unless authorised.
